UTI Treatment in Troy, MI

A urinary tract infection is miserable, and it does not get better on its own. You need same-day testing, the right antibiotic, and a physician who can rule out anything more serious. At Phase Medical Group, Dr. Alex Christofis offers prompt, in-office UTI diagnosis and treatment so you can stop guessing and start feeling better.

Whether this is your first infection or you deal with recurrent UTIs, your physician will take the time to understand what is happening and build a plan that actually resolves the problem, not just this episode.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system and multiply, causing inflammation and discomfort. Most UTIs affect the bladder (called cystitis), but untreated infections can travel up to the kidneys and become much more serious. UTIs are common, particularly in women, but men get them too and often need a deeper evaluation when they do.

Common UTI Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following, it is worth getting checked:

  • Burning or pain during urination
  • Frequent urge to urinate, even when little comes out
  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pelvic pressure or lower abdominal discomfort
  • Feeling generally unwell or fatigued

Fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or severe back or flank pain can mean the infection has reached the kidneys. Do not wait on those symptoms. Call our office right away or go to the emergency room.

Diagnosis and Testing

We start with a focused conversation about your symptoms and an in-office urinalysis, a simple urine test that checks for white blood cells, bacteria, and nitrites. Results are available during your visit, which means your physician can confirm the diagnosis and start treatment the same day.

In some cases your physician may also order a urine culture, which identifies the specific bacteria and tells us which antibiotic will work best. Cultures are especially useful for recurrent infections or when initial treatment does not clear symptoms. Any lab work sent out for culture is billed separately through your insurance.

Treatment Options

Most uncomplicated UTIs respond well to a short course of antibiotics. Commonly prescribed options include nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and fosfomycin. Your physician will select what is best for you based on your history, allergies, and any previous infections.

Most patients feel noticeably better within one to two days of starting antibiotics. Finish the full course even if you feel better early. Stopping too soon is how infections come back and how resistance develops.

Recurrent UTI Management

Recurrent UTIs are defined as two or more infections in six months, or three or more in a year. If that describes you, treating each episode as a one-off is not enough. Your physician will look for contributing factors and build a prevention strategy.

Strategies may include:

  • Lifestyle and hygiene adjustments
  • Post-intercourse antibiotic prophylaxis when appropriate
  • Low-dose daily antibiotic therapy for a defined period
  • Vaginal estrogen therapy for postmenopausal patients
  • Further workup to rule out structural or anatomical causes

UTIs in Men

UTIs are far less common in men, which is exactly why they warrant a closer look. Men typically need a longer course of antibiotics, and your physician may investigate contributors like an enlarged prostate, kidney stones, or other urinary tract abnormalities. Do not delay care. Early treatment prevents complications.

When It Is More Than a Simple UTI

Not all urinary symptoms point to a simple bladder infection. Your physician will consider whether your symptoms could indicate a kidney infection (pyelonephritis), a sexually transmitted infection, or another urological issue. High fever, severe flank or back pain, nausea and vomiting, or visible blood in the urine all warrant prompt evaluation. When a case needs a specialist or emergency care, we refer you quickly.

Insurance and Cost

UTI visits are billed as standard office visits and are covered by most insurance plans. The in-office urinalysis is part of your visit. If a urine culture or additional lab work is ordered, it is billed separately through your insurance. For coverage questions, call us at 248-847-0626.
