Sexual Health and STI Testing in Troy, MI

Sexual health is health. It is not a side topic. At Phase Medical Group in Troy, MI, Dr. Alex Christofis provides confidential, judgment-free STI testing and sexual health care for adults across Metro Detroit. No lecture. No awkwardness. Straight answers and real care.

As a board-certified family medicine physician, your physician handles a broad range of sexual health needs in one private office. No referral required for most services. You do not need to explain yourself. You just need to get checked.

STI Testing We Offer

Testing is performed in the office with a combination of blood draws, urine samples, and swabs depending on the infection. Most results come back within a few business days. Any lab work is billed separately through your insurance.

  • Chlamydia and gonorrhea - Urine test or swab. Often asymptomatic, which is exactly why routine screening matters.
  • Syphilis - Blood test. Rates are rising, and early-stage syphilis is easily treated with antibiotics.
  • HIV - Blood test. Modern HIV care is effective. Knowing your status matters.
  • Hepatitis B and C - Blood tests. Both are treatable, and hepatitis C is now curable with a short course of medication.
  • Trichomoniasis - Urine or swab. Common, often silent, and easy to treat.
  • HPV and cervical screening - Pap smear and HPV co-testing as part of women's health care.
  • Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2) - Testing available when symptoms or exposure warrant it.

Your physician will recommend which tests make sense based on your history, symptoms, and exposure. You do not have to guess.

Who Should Get Tested

Most STIs have no obvious symptoms. You can feel fine and still carry an infection that is treatable today but will cause problems later. Routine testing is how you catch it early.

  • Sexually active and not tested recently. If it has been more than a year, get screened.
  • New sexual partner or multiple partners. A baseline test with any new partner is smart.
  • Pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Screening protects both you and the pregnancy.
  • Unusual symptoms. Discharge, sores, pelvic pain, burning with urination, or anything that feels off.
  • Had unprotected sex with a new partner. Including when a condom broke.
  • Partner tested positive for an STI. You need to be tested and possibly treated regardless of symptoms.

What to Expect at Your Visit

Your physician starts with a short, private conversation. What are you worried about? What is your history? What kind of sex are you having? The goal is to recommend the right tests, not to judge the answers.

Depending on what you need, the visit may include a blood draw, a urine sample, and a physical or pelvic exam with swabs. Most tests take just a few minutes to collect. You can be in and out in under half an hour in many cases.

Results come through our patient portal. If anything is positive, our office contacts you directly to discuss treatment, not through an automated message. If everything is negative, you still get a clear summary and, where relevant, a recommendation for when to test again.

Treatment and Follow-Up

Most bacterial STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis) are curable with a short course of antibiotics. Viral STIs (HIV, herpes, hepatitis B) are managed long-term with medications that are highly effective. Hepatitis C is now curable with an 8 to 12 week course of antiviral pills.

Your physician will walk you through the treatment plan, help you think through partner notification, arrange follow-up testing, and refer to specialty care when it is the right fit. We also provide preventive counseling so you leave with a clear plan.

Sexual Health Beyond STIs

STI testing is one piece. Sexual health covers a lot more. Your physician can help with:

  • Erectile dysfunction: Evaluation, bloodwork to check for underlying causes, and prescription options. ED is common and treatable.
  • Low libido: Hormonal assessment for both men and women. Testosterone, thyroid, and other levels can affect desire.
  • Contraception: Birth control counseling covering oral pills, Nexplanon (the arm implant), IUDs, and other methods. We help you pick what fits your life.
  • Preventive counseling: PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for HIV, HPV vaccination, and risk reduction strategies.

Confidentiality

Every visit and result is HIPAA-protected and handled with strict confidentiality. Our practice is a family medicine office, not an OB/GYN or specialty clinic. For partners or family members seen at the same practice, records are separate.

Insurance and Cost

Most major insurance plans are accepted. Many preventive STI screenings are covered at no cost to you under the ACA. Lab work is billed separately through your insurance by the reference laboratory. Call 248-847-0626 with coverage questions.
