EKG and Heart Screening in Troy, MI
Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States. The good news is that a lot of it is catchable early, and an in-office EKG is one of the fastest, least invasive places to start. At Phase Medical Group, Dr. Alex Christofis offers same-day electrocardiogram (EKG) testing and comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment as part of your primary care.
Whether you need a pre-op clearance, have new symptoms, or just want a baseline, your physician can run the test, interpret it, and talk you through the results in a single visit.
What Is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a simple, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It measures the timing and strength of the electrical signals that make your heart beat, producing a tracing your physician can analyze. An EKG can reveal irregular rhythms (arrhythmias), signs of a previous heart attack, structural abnormalities, and other issues.
When Is an EKG Needed?
Your physician may recommend an EKG for a number of reasons:
Symptoms of a heart problem - chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, or fainting
Pre-operative clearance - many surgeons require an EKG before surgery, especially for patients over 40 or with existing conditions
Routine cardiovascular screening - baseline EKGs during an annual physical, particularly with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, or a family history of heart disease
Medication monitoring - some medications affect heart rhythm, and an EKG confirms your heart is responding safely
Follow-up after a cardiac event - monitoring heart function after a heart attack, procedure, or new diagnosis
What to Expect During the Test
An EKG is one of the quickest, most painless tests in medicine. Here is what happens:
You lie down on an exam table. You may need to change into a gown for chest access.
A technician places small adhesive electrodes (usually 12) on your chest, arms, and legs.
The machine records your heart's electrical activity for about 10 seconds while you lie still and breathe normally.
The electrodes come off and you are done.
Start to finish, 5 to 10 minutes. No needles, no pain, no special prep. You do not need to fast or stop medications unless your physician specifically tells you to.
Cardiovascular Risk Assessment
An EKG is one piece of the picture. Your physician may also review:
Blood pressure readings
Cholesterol and lipid panel results
Blood sugar and A1C levels
Family history of heart disease
Lifestyle factors: smoking, diet, exercise, stress
Body weight and BMI
Combining EKG findings with lab work and the rest of your health data gives your physician a clear picture of your overall heart risk and what to do about it.
Results and Next Steps
Because the EKG is performed and interpreted in our office, you get your results the same day. Your physician will walk through the tracing with you. Many EKGs are normal and provide reassurance. If the test shows something, your physician will discuss findings and outline next steps, which may include:
Additional testing such as an echocardiogram, stress test, or Holter monitor
Referral to a cardiologist for specialized evaluation
Medication adjustments or new prescriptions
Lifestyle modifications to reduce cardiovascular risk
Connection to Other Services
EKG testing pairs naturally with other services we offer. Pre-op clearance? We can do the EKG, bloodwork, and physical in the same visit. Annual physical? It fits right in. For patients with chronic conditions, EKGs are often part of chronic disease management. That integrated approach saves you trips and keeps nothing falling through the cracks.
Insurance and Cost
EKGs are covered by most insurance plans when medically indicated, typically when ordered due to symptoms, risk factors, or pre-surgical requirements. If additional lab work is ordered alongside your EKG, it is billed separately through your insurance. For coverage questions, call us at 248-847-0626.
